History Of Coalwood
The history of Coalwood has changed over time. The person who was responsible for running the city of Coalwood is George Lafayette Carter. He was a wealthy person who was an industrialist who bought the land and started coal mining. How he did his job was he hired a dentist and a doctor to provide service to his miners. He sold the mine to Consolidation Coal Company. Later he died in 1936 and gave the job to his son James which James sold to a company in 1947 called the Olga Coal Company. Back in the late 1950s, Olga was a working coal mine that provided employment to many people. In 1980 the Olga Coal Company was bought by the LTV corporation which closed Coalwood's mines in 1986. The big store was a very popular place to Coalwood and they tore it down in March of 2008. Big Creek High School is important to Coalwood. Homer Hickam Jr (Sonny Hickam), attended there and graduated the school in 1960. Sadly they had to close the high school down since the elementary school burned down.
